WRITING FOR A CAUSE
Digital Media and Multimodal Texts
University of Maryland, Baltimore County

DOING DIGITAL ACTIVISM
Writing for a Cause is an English course at UMBC introducing students to the production and analysis of digital texts, from Twitter threads to public digital archives, by studying the rhetorical strategies of advocacy organizations and social activists. We examine the theory and politics of digital media, the affordances of different media types and styles, and various tools for making and hosting digital texts. To understand the complexity of advocacy work, we center issues of identity and access in digital spaces. Over the semester, we will compose digital texts across multiple media about an advocacy/activist movement in which we find meaning.
