Radical vs Reform

This week we discussed how institutions can impact a movement, as well as two different ways to describe a movement's actions: radical (taking the system by the roots and changing everything from there up) and reform (taking what already exists within the system and changing it slightly to support your movement). We see reformation clearly exampled within Lewis's discussion of the DSM removal of homosexuality, but there is still no radical action taken for the DSM as a whole as of yet.
Within my research, I've realized that there is a lot of reformation within society surrounding trans youth. Governments are constantly editing their laws, allowing trans people to either exist or not. But who says that these institutions need to allow trans people to exist? Why are they deciding what is best for a body that is not their own? An easy example is of transgender youth and how their availability to life saving care (hormone therapy) is diminishing before our very eyes in states across the U.S. - why do politicians get to decide on the idea of saving someone's life, and then choose to actively create the worst possible outcome? It just does not make sense to me, as well as make me entirely upset!
