The Impacts of Crip Camp: How it Relates to Other Social Movements

In the documentary Crip Camp, we are are told a story of a summer camp that had opened for disabled bodies. Though, going deeper, it lead to inspiring activists to change how disabled people are treated, taken care of, and how they have access to places and things. Passing laws such as the federal American with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 that banned discrimination of people living with disabilities in places such as school and the work-place.

Critical events such as what is seen in Crip Camp, can be found in nearly every social revolution. In terms of gun control activism, it is hard to find any true progress being taken. One may assume that after the tragic events of Columbine in April of 1999, laws would have been passed to minimize mass shooting, especially within school. Though not many laws have been passed since, many social movement groups, such as GIFFORDS, have congregated since. In the article above, it is explained how the National Rifle Association hasn't only become more aggressive, but mass shooting in school and gun violence in general has increased.

Significant events that has lead to reform can be tracks through nearly every social movement except for the gun reform movements. This is even despite America have large amounts of mass shootings, in and outside of schools. This brings me to the question, what event will finally push American law makers to pass gun reform laws?

Between times of the shooting at Columbine High School (1999) and the shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School (2018), there have been 730 recorded incidents of gun violence in school.
