So, as far as I can tell from my brief research, anti-consumerist sentiment has existed nearly as long as consumerism (and by extension capitalism) have. The Sarasota Institute posits that there were three (maybe 5) main event (or chains of events) that set consumerism and anti-consumerism into effect: the first industrial revolution which popularized steam engines, the second that popularized electricity, and the third that gave rise to the digital era of technology. Several sources also cite World War 2 as a crux-point for consumerist mentality. Other than this, and the vague notion of the American Dream, wherein individuals are socialized to desire material possessions along with their success and hard work, there is not a whole lot of concrete history that I can find. Maybe if I narrow the topic down a little bit, I can find some contained events, but I don't even know where to start...
