Week 11

In "Genre: Permanence and Change" Miller et al. write about the limitations and affordances of genre in social action. I am forced to constantly consider how online information is categorized, even if unknowingly, and this shapes my perception of it. For example, I tend to be more skeptical of a social media post that is covering the same topic as an article, even if the article was also written by only one person. This has a lot to do with the presentation of the information, which also carries over into social media posts; I will trust someone verified more, and if someone has a professionally presented profile with a higher follower count and an official title, such as doctor, I will be more likely to digest the information they provide without as much question.

For example, the first resource that I am referencing from is a Twitter account owned by a Doctor. Her Twitter handle is her name, which provides a sense of authority and formality. Her Twitter bio lists a few of her interests and professions, stating "Public health Dr, health economist, researcher, philosopher, polymath. Co-Convener @PHAA_Eco deaf, ASD. Disability advocate." All of these are trustworthy things to have listed, meaning that I find her a credible source to pull from, despite the confines of the genre of social media.

This week Dr. Lea Merone responded to a tweet about a council developed to deal with medical misogyny, endorsing the message and expressing her approval. The original tweet she responded to links to an external website, providing more information on the topic and shifting the genre into a lengthier, more peer-reviewed and reliable one.

Jessica Pin retweeted this message about voting and supporting Roe v. Wade:

And Women in Medicine Summit posted this article about how leaders in health care can be more inclusive and supportive to minoritized employees such as women, people of color, and queer people.
