Week 6 Blog

From this week's reading, the biggest thing I took away from Lewis' essay was meaningless 'progress.' The DSM just tossing the LGBTQ+ community something to celebrate, and feel hopeful about! The LGBTQ+ community retaliated in a snarky manner, in which we love to see. Considering my movement about crime in insanely popular athletic associations/organizations, us activists always see shallow 'bones' thrown our way for us to be happy about, and feel change, when in reality, it is just a cycle we face. Deshaun Watson is a common example I use because of its recency, and what did the NFL do for the fans to make it feel like he was really paying the price? They suspended him 11 games, and that leaves him coming back in week 12 of the season. Who are they playing week 12? The Texans, his former team!" So while fans might be happy he is facing a slight consequence, the NFL still found a way to make their money, and make his criminal actions benefit them. Not enough people realize what is going on. This goes for the LGBTQ+ community in Lewis' piece too. Businesses and institutions go pride heavy during pride month, and too much of the time it is money-motivated. We need to see some change.
