In the documentary Crip Camp, there were many areas in the lives of people with disabilities that were brought to light. Additionally, this documentary showed the struggles and joys that people with disabilities face in a way that captured viewers attention.
One thing that both myself and other members of our class noticed was a shocking sense of inadequacy among the staff at the camp. It seemed that -- though the desire to help was great -- the preparation was lacking. This seemed very similar to my experiences with the foster system. Often, parents who want to foster have to go through training, however the training (and support after) leaves parents woefully unprepared. I think that, in both cases, people who want to serve their communities -- either by fostering children or building relationships with people with disabilities -- should be given adequate training and support. I know that there are people out in the world who want to help, but often they don't have the resources or knowledge to do so. Both myself and many other people on social media believe that the foster system is lacking in its support and teaching. I believe that we should endeavor to provide quality training and resources to those who want to take in and care for foster children, as well as those who want to serve at camps like the one in this documentary.
