While this movie came out almost four years ago, I think it is important to note that the film Instant Family has a unique and powerful message. As a foster sibling, I get a lot of questions about how the foster system works. In particular, people wonder if the film industry accurately represents the experience of being a foster kid or parent. I tend to avoid watching shows or movies about foster care because they seem too fake and insincere. When the movie Instant Family came out, my parents, who have been foster parents for the past 13 years, were invited to a pre-screening event. My mom said that she cried for a majority of the movie because it reminded her of so many different experiences our family has gone through. I have seen the movie three times now, and I have cried every time. You wouldn’t think a movie starring Mark Wahlberg would accurately depict the true nature of the foster system, however this film is one of the most moving and heart-wrenching movies about foster care I have ever seen. Don’t believe me? Beverly Clarke, the Director of Clinical & Support Services at the Barker Adoption Foundation shares her thoughts on how this movie depicts the foster system. Read her blog here. You can find more information about the film at #instantfamilymovie and foster care at #fosteradopt, #barkeradoptionfoundation, or follow the Anne Arundel County Foster Parent Association here.
Foster care is a nation-wide phenomenon, yet it doesn't get much coverage in news or the film industry. I was so happy when a movie was made that accurately showed what it is like to have a foster family. I would highly encourage you to take two hours of your time and watch this movie. It gives viewers a glimpse into the world of foster care and what life looks like as a foster parent. Based on a true story, this film will make you laugh, cry, and hopefully will grow your knowledge of the foster system... and maybe convince you to become a foster parent yourself ;)
