Week 10 Blog Post

The text for this week by Madison and Klang discusses slacktivism and the notion that there are instances in which both digital and political activism function best. The piece was notable in that it pointed out an aspect of digital resources as potentially negative when it comes to political activism. This strives from the reputation digital resources such as social media have as fundamental to the spreading of news, a tool for keeping in touch with others, etc. However the term “slacticism” accentuates social media as a medium through which one does not need to physically take part in activism. But, as the Madison and Klang piece points out, there are instances in which digital media has an advantage over in person occurrences. For example, it spreads awareness to an audience who would otherwise not likely have that information. The updates in my movement for this week relate to additional measures and resources that San Mateo County has made available to its citizens to improve gun safety. Also, there is a program being released in several cities in New York intended to raise public awareness and reach out to neighborhoods to lessen the risk of gun violence. However, there was also news released that another tragedy occurred at a high school in St Louis. It was recorded by the news site that the gunman even referred to himself as at risk for committing his crimes because he did not have any type of social life. This portrays a grave impact on how these tragedies keep taking place and the ones committing these crimes are showing similar warning signs yet there still appears to be a lack of resources to step in when they show warning signs that they could potentially harm others.
