Week 12-13 Blog Post

This reading, written by Jennifer Nish, talks about the concept of genres from a perspective of uptake, specifically through the hashtags #ChallengeAccepted and #WomenSupportingWomen. Uptake is how a reader interprets and responds to a specific genre: "Uptake highlights the relational process in which genres, actions, and people are linked and interact with one another. In this context, uptake refers to the interaction between texts and the relationship between text and action". In terms of uptake in a movement, their uptake is determined by how easily they are able to be spread online and how fellow activists respond to it. Uptake, Nish describes, is important in activist participation; activists use various genres to share ideas and information, spreading the word to others, and invoking others to take action. Activists can contribute creativity into the genres they choose to use and utilize their uptake knowledge in their activist work.

The Me Too Movement altogether is built on the foundation of a singular hashtag that has spread all over the internet: #MeToo. This hashtag has received tremendous uptake, sparking political change, social change, entertainment industries, forms of offline activism, and promoting the movement at prominent events such as the Oscars. It's main goal is to really conjure an element of solidarity within the community, survivors finding the courage to speak up and say "this happened to me too". Seeing how something as horrible as sexual assault has happened to so many people, a general consensus was formed, one that said that something needed to be done about it. This evoked a lot of protest and action within the community, showcasing a very beneficial uptake within this movement.
