On October 19 2022, San Mateo county in California released on their website the launching of a new program that hopes to improve public safety in relation to gun violence. The program consists of maintaining that certain individuals are prevented from obtaining firearms such as those convicted of crimes or any other violent acts whether that is gun or domestic violence. This program relates to the March For Our Lives movement because San Mateo county is taking action and putting stricter rules in place to make firearms less accessible to individuals who are considered a high risk. So, this event is taking action in a direction that March For Our Lives is advocating for. The New York state website announced the funding of 28 million dollars to prevent gun violence on Oct 24, 2022. The intent is to introduce various cities in New York who are at high risk for gun violence to different programs that can aid families and strengthen the community factor. They note that a lack of support from the surrounding community can be a factor in what causes gun violence. This relates to the March For Our Lives movement because this program is being put in place to prevent gun violence and provide resources for individuals who could be at risk. One thing to note though is that the emphasis in this event is on a different element of what can cause gun violence. On October 25 2022 there was a shooting at St Louis high school in Missouri. It resulted in the death of at least one student and one faculty member. This ties into March For Our Lives because it is occurrences such as this one that the movement is striving to prevent altogether. This event is also evidence that gun violence is still an issue.
